Evidence through 4 September 2026. A public-interest reference, not a live emergency service.

People · names · voice

Distinct peoples should be named with care.

The CHT is home to Indigenous peoples with distinct languages and histories, Bengali residents with varied migration and family histories, and people whose identities do not fit a simple list. Naming is evidence work, not decoration.

Research cutoff: 4 September 2026. Definitions and verification status travel with each claim.

Names guide

Start with specificity and humility.

Community-preferred usage

Use the name a community uses for itself when reliable, current evidence is available. Keep common alternatives for discovery without flattening difference.

Language is not a proxy

A language label does not automatically establish ethnicity, locality, religion, citizenship or political position.

Umbrella terms need context

Jumma or Pahari may be meaningful collective identities, but neither replaces a named people. Marma, Rakhine and the dated label “Magh” are not automatically interchangeable.

Review state. Profiles are an English source edition and have not yet completed community review. Suggest a preferred name, source or correction.

Profile and filter contract

Chakma/Changma, Marma, Tripura/Tripuri, Tanchangya, Mro, Bawm, Pangkhua, Chak, Khyang, Khumi and Lushai each receive equal structural depth. Search must match preferred names, variants and evidence-gap terms, announce result count and preserve an empty state.

Jumma or Pahari may be meaningful umbrella identities but cannot replace named peoples. Marma, Rakhine and the dated historical label “Magh” are not automatically interchangeable. [MS0015][MS0017][MS0018][MS0025]
