A population total is inseparable from its categories.
Counts can differ because boundaries, census methods, enumeration coverage, labels, reference dates, and published tables differ. The atlas keeps incompatible series parallel rather than manufacturing a seamless trend.

Historical totals become comparable only after the boundary, reference date, category system, and coverage rule are aligned.

Show omissions, method changes and incompatible denominators beside the value.
Responsible interpretation
Totals do not explain causes.
Keep original labels visible
Modernised or aggregated wording should not erase the category actually used by the source.
Avoid false precision
A published number can be exact in appearance while uncertain in coverage or definition.
Do not infer identity
Population tables cannot establish the identity, beliefs, affiliation, or conduct of an individual.
